Is It Time To Change My Central Vacuum Filter? Here’s How to Know

There’s no shortage of items we use on a daily basis that contain some sort of filter that, inevitably over time, will need to be replaced. Whether it’s your central air handler, your vehicle or in our case, your central vacuum system, it’s important to stay on top of this relatively easy maintenance item.

Much like our vehicles, clean filters allow our motors to run cleaner and enjoy a longer life cycle. The same is true for vacuum cleaners.

Given the amount of dirt, dust and debris that central vacuums are exposed to, it’s important to keep a keen eye on the condition of your system’s filter and change when necessary.

With that in mind, the next question asked is often, “ok, how often?”

The reality is, the answer to that question depends on how you use your vacuum. For empty-nesters who only have to clean up after themselves, their filter will last longer than say a family of four with pets. It all depends on how you use your system and what it’s picking up in the process.

That said, there are some telltale signs to look out for that would indicate a faulty or dirty filter. If you find that your system is making a lot more noise than usual, that could be an indication of a dirty filter. A clogged filter will not allow as much airflow and will inevitably make your system’s motor work that much harder. You’ll hear the difference and should investigate right away.

A loss in suction pressure is another leading indicator of a clogged filter. For the same reason as above, the lack of airflow will ultimately end up affecting the performance of your unit. If you notice a drop in suction, check for blockages first and then move on to the filter.

Outside of the audible cues, there are other physical signs to look for as well. If your filter is becoming dirty and clogged, you’ll likely notice a buildup of dust around the unit. In some cases, your unit will become dusty and might even end up on the flooring around your central unit. Always have a keen eye on the physical appearance of the outside of your unit as a dirty filter will inevitably begin to flow over and show signs on the outside.

Lastly, if you notice that your filter looks dirty, that’s another obvious way to tell that it needs replacing. If you happen to be emptying out your unit, always be sure to inspect your filter while you are inside the canister. Not much can beat a physical inspection and if you think it might be time, it’s worth swapping it out or giving us a call for some routine maintenance.

By following the above, you’ll not only ensure that your central vacuum lasts a lot longer, you’ll also do wonders for the cleanliness of your home. Acting as a barricade for dust and other allergens in your home, your vacuum’s filter is one of the last lines of defense in your home’s air quality.
